Our Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) policy is a smart addition to your motor vehicle insurance portfolio, covering you in case of sudden and unforeseen mechanical and electrical failure.

For over 35 years, we have been delivering dependable car, motorcycle, and classic vehicle insurance policies in the NZ.  Our comprehensive insurance packages solidify our reputation as New Zealand’s premium mechanical breakdown insurance provider.

MBI can only be purchased at the time of vehicle sale when purchased from an Assurant approved Dealership. Your dealer will discuss the best option for your new vehicle. Not all cover types are available at every dealership.

Our Cover Options at a Glance

All our insurance packages cover most major mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, including labour. You can choose from our Optimum, Maxi and Kinetic polices. Each provides a different set of qualification and level of coverage:

Optimum

  • Vehicles up to 225,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 20 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Vehicles that are petrol or diesel

Maxi

  • Vehicles up to 300,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 20 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Vehicles that are petrol or diesel

Kinetic

  • Vehicles up to 150,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 15 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Vehicles that are EV, PHEV or Hybrid

Note: While an MBI policy is always recommended when purchasing a new vehicle, it cannot replace a manufacturer's obligations or warranties. An MBI policy is recommended after your warranty has expired—most mechanical issues come out of the woodwork once your manufacturer's warranty has run out. This insurance is issued by Protecta Insurance New Zealand Limited (NZ Company No 312700) of 110 Symonds Street, Grafton, Auckland 1010 (Protecta) as agent for Virginia Surety Company Inc, New Zealand branch (a US incorporated company with NZ Company No 920655) of Unit 3, Level 2, 73 Manchester Street, Christchurch 8011 (VSC).
